How to Use One-Step RSS Search Alerts

One-step RSS alerts are alerts that can be set up from EBSCOhost without signing in to the user’s personal account (My EBSCOhost). For the user that prefers viewing search or journal alerts via an RSS reader, one-step alerts offer a quick and easy way to obtain the alert syndication feed, which can then be copied into an RSS reader.

One-step alerts are convenient––and provide added flexibility––when creating search and journal alerts. If the user is not personalized, and wants to view alert information via an RSS reader, alerts can be set up without signing in to My EBSCOhost. Alternatively, if the user is personalized, alerts can be set up using the one-step method, or using the “traditional” Saved Search/Alerts (or Save Journal Alerts) Screen.

Note: Be sure to add the feed to an aggregator within one week of its creation. A one-step alert will not expire unless the aggregator does not automatically update results (extremely unlikely) supplied by the feed for two months.

Your library administrator decides whether one-step alerting is available.

Creating an RSS Search Alert

To set up a one-step RSS search alert:

  1. From the Result List or Search History Screen, click the RSS alert icon, or the RSS Feed link on the Share drop-down menu.

  2. A pop-up screen displays with the search alert information. Copy the RSS Feed URL into your newsreader.

  3. Click the Save Alert button.

  4. If you decide that e-mail delivery of the alert information is required, click the Sign in link. Once you sign in to My EBSCOhost, the Search Alert Screen appears. You can save the alert as described in Saving a Search as an Alert.

Editing the Name of your RSS Alert

One-step alerts are editable from the folder as soon as they have been created.  If you have not signed in to My EBSCOhost, the Edit Alert option is only available for the current session in which the one step Alert was created. If you did sign in to your My EBSCOhost account, the alert will remain in your folder until you remove it.

To edit the alert name for an RSS feed:

  1. Click on the Folder has items link.

  2. From the Folder List, select Search Alerts.

  3. Click the Edit Alert link. If you have not signed in to My EBSCOhost, you will be prompted to do so.

  4. Modify the Alert Name (or other available fields) to meet your needs.

  5. Click Save.  A message window displays the updated information for your alert.

  6. Click Continue. (You can copy and paste the Syndicated Feed URL from this screen into your RSS reader.)

Note:  If you have not signed in to your My EBSCOhost folder, you can also select "To enable e-mail delivery or change any settings: Sign in and create a new alert" from the One-Step Alert Screen. 


Including Abstracts in RSS Alerts

You can set your RSS alerts to send more detailed information including abstracts.

To edit an RSS alert to include abstracts:

  1. Ensure that you are logged into your My EBSCOhost folder.

  2. After conducting your search, click the Share drop-down menu on the result list screen.

  3. Click on the RSS icon rss feed icon to create a One-Step RSS alert.

    The RSS alert feed will be displayed.

  4. Click OK to save the alert to your folder.

  5. Click on the Folder link in the upper right corner or click on Folder Has Items.

  6. Click on Search Alerts from the folder menu on the left. Your alert will appear.

  7. Click on Edit Alert. If you are not logged into your my EBSCOhost folder, you will be prompted to do so.

  8. Scroll down through the alert until you see Alert Options and select Detailed.

  9. Click Save. Your RSS alert will begin to return detailed information with abstracts the next day.

Note: If you create your alert using the Save Searches/Alerts link from the Search History/Alerts tab and select Detailed from the Alert Options, it will immediately send detailed information with abstracts.

Use RSS for an Existing Alert

If you have previously created a search alert for e-mail delivery, you can include these alerts in your RSS reader.

To retrieve the Alert Syndication Feed with an existing search alert or journal alert:

  1. Sign in to your “My EBSCOhost” account.

  2. On the left hand side of your personalized folder, choose the Search Alerts link.

  3. On the Search Alerts result list, you will notice the RSS icon for each search alert. Click the RSS icon and a new window will open.

  4. The Alert Syndication Feed link will appear in the browser’s address bar. Add this link to your RSS reader.


Do One-Step RSS Alerts Expire?

EBSCOhost displays confirmation that the One-Step RSS Alert has been created, including its RSS feed, used to enable news readers or web pages (aggregators) to display alert results. As long the user adds the feed to an aggregator within one week of its creation, it will not expire, unless the aggregator does not automatically update results (extremely unlikely) supplied by the feed for two months.
