Why Are Single Quotation Marks used Instead of Double Quotation Marks in EBSCO citations?

Due to search engine restrictions, EBSCO cannot include double quotation marks within a searchable database field, e.g. Abstract Field (AB).

When processing records, EBSCO will replace any instance of double quotation marks within the abstract or other searchable field with single quotation marks so as to retain some indication of the original punctuation.

Note: This restriction does not apply to the HTML Full Text where double quotation marks may appear.
