This lesson plan can be used in the high school science classroom. Many plants produce chemical compounds that protect them from insect infestation. Some of these compounds are aromatic, and are used by humans to make essential oils and perfumes. Students will investigate the process of distillation, a relatively safe procedure that allows them to practice chemistry lab skills as they extract natural organic compounds.
Aligned with Common Core State Standards as well as the National Professional Organization Standards (Next Generation Science Standards), this lesson includes recommended search strings for locating relevant content in Science Reference Center.
