Q. How are COUNTER Reports used?
A. With COUNTER Reports:

Libraries can:

  • Compare usage statistics from different vendors
  • Derive useful metrics such as cost-per-use
  • Make better-informed purchasing decisions

  • Compare usage of different delivery channels

Acronym Title Definition
JR1 Journal Report 1 Number of successful full-text article requests by month and journal
JR5 Journal Report 5 Number of successful full-text article requests by year-of-publication (YOP) and journal
DB1 Database Report 1 Total searches, result clicks and record views by month and database
DB2 Database Report 2 Access denied by month, database and category
PR1 Platform Report 1 Total searches, result clicks and record views by month and database
BR1 Book Report 1 Number of successful title requests by month and title
BR2 Book Report 2 Number of successful section requests by month and title
BR3 Book Report 3 Access denied to content items by month, title and category
CR1 Consortium Report 1 (XML Only) Number of successful full-text journal article or book chapter requests by month and title
CR2 Consortium Report 2 (XML Only) Total searches by month and database; calculated on the same basis as for Database Report 1

Note: Consortium Reports CR1 and CR2 are only available through the EBSCOhost SUSHI Web Service.

 

Q. What are the available COUNTER Report fields?
A. The fields available in COUNTER reports from EBSCOadmin are as follows:

Journal Report 1 (JR1)

  • Print & Online ISSN – If multiple available, will only show one of each kind
  • Reporting Period Total – FT article retrievals in all formats
  • Reporting Period HTML – FT article retrievals in HTML format
  • Reporting Period PDF – FT article retrievals in PDF format
  • Monthly Usage – Usage in each month of the requested reporting period

Journal Report 5 (JR5)

  • Print & Online ISSN – If multiple available, will only show one of each kind
  • Articles in Press – Not available in EBSCOhost
  • YOP Last 2 Decades – Usage of each year of publication for the last two decades
  • YOP Pre-2000 – Total usage of all years of publication before 2000
  • YOP Unknown – Total usage when year of publication is unknown

Database Report 1 (DB1), Platform Report 1 (PR1), Consortium Report 2 (CR2)

  • Regular Searches – Searches when the interface is EBSCOhost or other EBSCO owned
  • Searches Federated & Automated – Searches when the interface is EDS, EDS API, EIT or Z39.50
  • Result Clicks – Retrievals and LinkOuts when the interface is Ehost, EDS or other EBSCO owned
  • Record Views – Abstract views only when the interface is Ehost, EDS or other EBSCO owned

Database Report 2 (DB2)

  • Access Denied: Concurrent/Simultaneous User License Limit Exceeded
    – Total turnaway count due to Simultaneous user limit being reached, or eBook turnaway related to the user’s checkout limit being exceeded, or no copies being available for checkout

Book Report 1 (BR1), Book Report 2 (BR2), Consortium Report 2 (CR2)

  • ISBN – Online ISBN Populated if available. If Online ISBN is not available, Print ISBN will be Populated.
  • ISSN – Print ISSN will be populated if available, else left blank
  • Reporting Period Total – Total full book retrievals
  • Monthly Usage – Usage in each month of the requested reporting period.

Book Report 3 (BR3)

  • Access Denied: Concurrent/Simultaneous User License Limit Exceeded
    – Total turnaway count due to Simultaneous user limit being reached, or eBook turnaway related to the user’s checkout limit being exceeded, or no copies being available for checkout Access Denied: Content Item not Licensed – 0
