How do I use the EBSCO Direct URL Builder tool?

Direct links are a great way to target specific EBSCO databases and interfaces in resource lists on your website, or to target a URL for a web button.

The Direct URL Builder tool can be used to easily set up direct URLs to your EBSCO databases and interfaces.

Click button to access URL Builder

Step One: Set Search Parameters

Set Search Parameters

  1. Interface: Select the Interface you would like your URL to access from the drop-down menu.

  2. Choose Databases: If you have selected the EBSCOhost Research Databases interface, you can select a specific database for your URL to target. Search for a database by typing the name or part of the name in the search box.

  3. Check the box or boxes for the desired databases.

    • If you select multiple databases, a direct URL is created for each individual database.

    • To create a URL that includes all of your available databases, leave all of the databases in the list unchecked.

Step Two: Select Authentication Parameters

Set Authentication Parameters

  1. Customer ID: Enter your Customer ID.

    • If you are using Guest Access, be sure to enter your Customer ID.

    • If you are creating URLs that will be used by several institutions (for example, libraries that are part of a consortia) leave the Customer ID field empty.

  2. Group ID: If you are creating a URL that includes Guest Access authentication, add the Group ID that contains the EBSCO Discovery Service profile for which you have enabled Guest Access.

  3. Proxy: If you have a proxy set up for your institution, cut and paste the example URL that matches what you used to set up your proxy in EBSCOadmin and paste it into the empty Proxy field. Replace the green portion with your proxy server domain and path values.

  4. Authentication Methods: Select any of the available authentication methods from the first list and select one method from the second list.

For example, you can select IP Address from the first list and User ID/Password from the second. In this instance, users accessing from inside your institution may be able to access seamlessly via IP address, while external users that click on the same URL would be prompted for their User ID and password.

Step Three: Generate the URL(s)

Generate URLs

  1. Generate URLs: Click the Generate URLs button to display your URLs in the window.

  2. Click the URLs to open them in a new window or tab, or use your browsers right-click copy and paste functionality to copy your new URLs and paste them into your institution's website.
