The Did-You-Mean feature available in EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) and EBSCOhost, offers suggested terms for queries with misspellings and typographical errors based on EBSCO’s search log data across all customer accounts globally. Though English language queries can be more common due to their popularity, the Did-You-Mean feature supports multiple languages.
Customers who previously had the Spellchecker setting in EBSCOadmin set to On have been automatically enabled for the Show Did-You-Mean Suggestion setting.
To verify that Did-You-Mean is enabled, or to enable it on your profiles, use the following instructions:
Select the profile and click the Searching Sub-Tab.
Select from the General Settings:
Spellchecker - This feature is now deprecated. It has been replaced by the Did-You-Mean Suggestion feature and this parameter is no longer functional.
Show Did-You-Mean Suggestion - Indicate whether the Did-You-Mean feature should suggest search terms for queries with misspellings and typographical errors based on EBSCO’s search log data. (The default is On for new profiles.)
Auto Correct and Autocomplete
In addition to the Did-You-Mean feature, EDS and EBSCOhost may also include Auto Correct and Autocomplete. When all three features are enabled, these search aids work together to produce successful searches.
The Auto Correct Search Terms feature automatically runs a search for terms that you may have misspelled when there there is a high degree of confidence that there is a better alternative than what was entered into the search box.
The Autocomplete feature offers suggested terms based on popular search terms across all customer accounts globally. In addition, the feature supports multiple languages, though English language queries can be more common due to their popularity. Suggested terms are ordered by the frequency in which the term is searched, with the most popular search terms appearing first.
Please note: If your administrator has also enabled the Auto Correct Search Terms feature in EBSCOadmin, the system evaluates the search terms entered and based on the degree of confidence, either auto corrects the terms and displays results, or executes the search as entered and displays the Did-You-Mean feature with hyperlinked terms that may have been intended.
